Growing Fennel
Florence fennel requires a long, cool growing season, typically about 100 days. It tolerates cold but can be killed by frosts. High temperatures can cause the plant to bolt.
Florence fennel should be sown ¼ inch deep and plants should be spaced 10-12 inches apart after thinning. It generally takes 7-14 days to sprout and 90-115 days to harvest.
Florence fennel thrives best in humus-rich, well-drained soil. A monthly supply of well-rotted manure or manure tea can help the plant produce tender, thick-fleshed bulbs, and stems.
The bulbous stems will be fully grown at 90 to 120 days, at which point they should be harvested. The leaves and tender branches can be used as soon as the plant is about 18 inches tall.
