The classic ‘Lollo Rossa’, sometimes called ‘Lollo Rosso’, is lettuce with red, strongly curled leaves. It grows slightly less dense than the green variant. Lettuce leaves can be harvested continuously from the outside to the inside, the plants continue to grow.
Growing the Lollo Rossa Lettuce from Seeds
It is easy to germinate (although the seed is quite small and it is difficult to handle it a bit). You can also sow Lettuce directly outdoors.
The seedlings can be planted in the garden at the end of April or the beginning of May. The optimum temperature for growth is between 15-20ºC, at less than 5ºC the plant stops its growth.
Lollo Rossa Lettuce is a loose-leaf variety that does not form the bud. It’s important to keep your lettuces weed-free at all times and avoid spilling soil on the leaves when weeding.
During dry spells, you may need to water your plants. Harvest the entire plant or outer leaves, the plant will continue to grow under the right conditions, Lollo Rossa lettuce will produce leaves for three months or more.
