Root vegetables are quite literally the fruits of the earth, the hearty bulbs that swell and thrive beneath the soil. These seasonal vegetables are relatively easy to grow if you give them a good start. Root crops are easy to grow in loose, well-worked, rich garden soil.
How To Grow Root Vegetables
- Soil: To grow root vegetables, you’ll need a loose, ideally raised soil bed. The key to growing root vegetables is ensuring that the soil is loose enough for the plants to send down roots.
- Seeds Sowing Season: They grow best in cool weather, direct-sow the seeds in spring. Sept-Oct-Nov are the best month to sow in India.
- Sun Exposure: Full sun, part sun
-
Spacing, Depth, and Support: Plant seeds about 1 to 2 inches apart, and space rows about a foot apart. The seeds should only be about 1/2 inch deep.

I planted a batch of these winter root vegetable seeds and all have sprouted and look like they are doing well. The price might seem high for the package size but there are many different seeds inside, well labeled. I shared some with a neighbor and still have more than enough.

They all came in individual labeled packets for me! Can’t wait to start planting in the spring!
