Nkruma Tenten Okra

Nkruma Tenten, or tree okra as it’s sometimes called, is this cool old-school variety that comes straight from Ghana in West Africa.

Botanically speaking, it’s Abelmoschus caillei, which started as a hybrid of common okra (A. esculentus) and A. manihot, now it’s recognized as its own species. That crossbreeding gives it some solid built-in protection from yellow mosaic virus, which is a big plus.

These plants are impressive growers, stretching up to 10 feet or higher into a sprawling, tree-like bush. They start off slow, but once they’re settled in, the yields just keep coming.

Vibrant red stems, spineless dark green leaves, and pods in a rich green shade sometimes accented with red or purple tones. Expect substantial, thick-walled pods around 4-6 inches when ready for harvest, along with generous flowers and a thick calyx.
